Welcome to the Department of Statistics
Statistics as a subject was introduced in the Department of Mathematics under the visionary guidance of Prof. Jacob Masih in July 1970. In 1971, the department welcomed Prof. I. D. Dhariyal, whose subsequent affiliation with IIT Kanpur marked a significant milestone. This event led to the department being renamed as the "Department of Mathematics and Statistics," reflecting its expanded academic focus and expertise. Over the years, the department has been graced by numerous distinguished scholars, including Prof. Sushil Kumar Bhargava, who joined RBI in 1976; Prof. B. K. Taneja, who moved to the USA in 1978; Prof. Amitabh Lal Das, Retired I.A.S.; Prof. Kuldeep Kumar, Bond University, Australia.
The Department of Statistics was officially established as an independent entity on May 5, 2001, under the leadership of Dr. Santosh Kumar, who retired from the department in 2018 and Dr. Randhir Singh, who retired from the department in 2024. Since its inception, the department has dedicated itself to enhancing the quality of statistical education and research, fostering an environment of academic excellence. This commitment to advancing the field of statistics is reflected in the department's robust curriculum, innovative research, and the significant contributions of its alumni and faculty to the global community.
At the Department of Statistics, we are dedicated to shaping the next generation of statisticians and data scientists. We invite prospective students and researchers to explore our programs and join us in our journey of academic and professional growth in the field of Statistics.
