Any educational institution or department has usually glorious past history, coupled with progressive present and promising bright future, and Philosophy Department of Ewing Christian college is no exception to it. It was established in the year 1956 with Dr. Miss R. Rudra (1956–88) as a founder head. She was a serious scholar of Comparative Philosophy and Philosophy of Religion. The other faculty members of the department are Dr. H. C. Jaiswal (1965-69), Dr. S. W. Saunders (1967-79), Dr. M. P. Singh (1980-99), Dr. S. B. Singh (1988-2022), Dr. S. K. Shukla (1995 till present). Dr. M. P. Singh had specialisation over the Philosophy of Immanuel Kant, whereas Dr. S. B. Singh was a decent scholar of Socio-Political Philosophy and Philosophy of Religion. Dr. S. K. Shukla is a well recognised scholar of Emmanuel Kant, Phenomenology and other trends of Contemporary Western Philosophy. Dr. S. K. Tiwari is teaching in the Department with specialisation over Classical Indian Philosophy. The Department has successfully organised several ICPR sponsored National Seminars, Conferences and Workshops which clearly exhibits its dynamic spirit. Our Department was recognised as a ‘Star Department’ under the UGC scheme of ‘College with potential for excellence’. The Department has an excellent library in which a good collection of standard text books, reference books and encyclopaedia of Indian Philosophy (complete set), and are available for students of post- graduation and research. Philosophy Department is offering the Skill Enhancement course – “Yoga : Theory and Practice” to the students of B. A. IIIrd or B. A. 4th semester under National Education Policy (N.E.P.). This course offers the opportunities to the students to be either self- employed or serve in any institution (Government or Private) as a Yoga teacher or instructor. The departmental credentials can be easily gleaned by these facts that our department was selected first amongst all the constituent college of Allahabad University to start P.G. course and several batches of P.G. classes have been successfully conducted and apart from that Philosophy Department is given the permission to supervise the research scholars. 8 research scholars and 2 supernumerary research scholars are doing research under the supervision of Professor Sanjay Kumar Shukla. All the research scholars are getting fellowship – 8 UGC Fellowship and 2 ICPR Fellowship. There is one Post-Doctoral ICPR Fellow doing research under him. Professor Sanjay Kumar Shukla is at present heading the department. He is the author of 11 books and to his credit more than 6 dozens of research papers in the leading journals of Philosophy, edited books and proceedings of seminars and conferences.
